BYD's electric bus sales climbed 51.8% year on year in August 2026, even as the company's broader commercial vehicle business suffered a sharp month-on-month downturn, according to newly published delivery figures.
The Chinese manufacturer sold 580 electric buses in August, up from 382 units in August 2025. However, the figure represented a 6.5% decline compared with July 2026, when BYD delivered 620 electric buses.
Across the first eight months of 2026, BYD has recorded 3,749 electric bus sales, an increase of 12.55% on the 3,331 units sold over the same period in 2025, pointing to steady growth in this segment of the business.
The picture was markedly different for BYD's non-bus commercial vehicle sales, which fell 76.8% month on month, dropping from 7,519 deliveries in July to just 1,743 in August. The figure matched BYD's non-bus commercial vehicle sales from August 2025, when the company also recorded exactly 1,743 deliveries, meaning year-on-year growth in this category was effectively zero for the month.
Despite the sharp monthly fall, BYD has sold considerably more non-bus commercial vehicles across the year to date than it did in the same period in 2025. The company delivered 42,435 such vehicles in the first eight months of 2026, up 22.14% from the 34,743 units sold in the equivalent period the previous year.
Taken together, BYD's total commercial vehicle deliveries, combining buses and non-bus vehicles, stood at 2,323 in August 2026. This was up 9.3% year on year from 2,125 deliveries in August 2025, but represented a 71.5% fall from the 8,139 deliveries recorded in July.
For the first eight months of 2026 as a whole, BYD's total commercial vehicle deliveries reached 46,184, an increase of 21.3% on the 38,074 deliveries recorded across the same period in 2025.
The scale of the month-on-month drop in non-bus commercial vehicle sales has raised questions about the consistency of BYD's output in this segment. The company sold approximately 15,000 commercial vehicles in total across the final three months of 2025, a figure that underlines how volatile monthly sales in this category can be.
Despite the August slowdown, the year-to-date figures suggest BYD remains on course for solid annual growth across both its electric bus and wider commercial vehicle businesses. The consistent year-on-year gains recorded over the first eight months of 2026 indicate underlying demand has held up even as monthly deliveries have fluctuated.
The figures highlight the uneven nature of month-to-month reporting in the commercial vehicle sector, where large single-month swings can mask steadier underlying annual trends. While BYD's electric bus division has shown more consistent growth, the sharp swings in its non-bus commercial vehicle sales point to greater volatility in that part of the business, even as cumulative annual figures remain positive.
