Scientists have found that drinking orange juice every day may alter the activity of thousands of genes inside immune cells, many of which help regulate blood pressure, inflammation and how the body processes sugar, according to a recent study reported by The Conversation.
The research followed adults who consumed 500ml of pure pasteurised orange juice daily for two months. By the end of the 60-day period, researchers observed reduced activity in several genes typically associated with inflammation and elevated blood pressure.
Among the genes affected were NAMPT, IL6, IL1B and NLRP3, which are usually activated when the body is under stress, as well as SGK1, a gene that influences the kidneys' ability to retain sodium. The findings echo earlier research indicating that daily orange juice consumption can lower blood pressure in young adults.
According to the study, orange juice does not simply act as a source of sugar. Instead, it appears to produce subtle shifts in the body's regulatory systems that reduce inflammation and support the relaxation of blood vessels. Researchers point to hesperidin, a citrus flavonoid known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as a likely contributor to these effects on blood pressure, cholesterol balance and sugar metabolism.
The response to orange juice consumption appeared to vary according to body size. Participants carrying more weight showed greater changes in genes linked to fat metabolism, while leaner volunteers demonstrated stronger effects on inflammation-related genes.
A systematic review of controlled trials, involving 639 participants across 15 separate studies, found that regular orange juice consumption was associated with lower insulin resistance and reduced blood cholesterol levels. Insulin resistance is considered a key feature of pre-diabetes, while elevated cholesterol remains an established risk factor for heart disease.
A separate analysis focusing on overweight and obese adults reported small reductions in systolic blood pressure alongside increases in high density lipoprotein (HDL), often referred to as "good" cholesterol, following several weeks of daily consumption. Researchers noted that although these changes were modest, small improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol sustained over many years can have a meaningful cumulative effect.
Further evidence has emerged from studies examining metabolites, the small molecules produced as the body processes food. One review found that orange juice appeared to influence biological pathways related to energy use, cell communication and inflammation. Researchers also suggested it may affect the gut microbiome, which is increasingly recognised as playing a role in cardiovascular health.
In one study, participants who drank blood orange juice daily for a month showed an increase in gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids, compounds associated with maintaining healthy blood pressure and reducing inflammation. Volunteers in that study also demonstrated improved blood sugar control and lower levels of inflammatory markers.
People with metabolic syndrome, a combination of risk factors including high blood pressure, raised blood sugar and excess body fat, may see particular benefits, according to the research. One study found that daily orange juice consumption improved endothelial function, the ability of blood vessels to relax and widen, in 68 participants with obesity. Better endothelial function is associated with a lower risk of heart attacks.
Not every study has produced consistent results. A broader analysis of blood fat concentrations found that while levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL), often called "bad" cholesterol, frequently decreased, other measurements such as triglycerides and HDL did not change substantially. Researchers noted that regular consumers of orange juice may still experience benefits despite this variability.
A study of 129 workers at an orange juice factory in Brazil reported lower blood concentrations of apolipoprotein B, a marker that reflects the number of cholesterol-carrying particles linked to heart attack risk.
Taken together, researchers say the evidence challenges the assumption that drinking citrus juice amounts to little more than consuming sugar in liquid form. They note that whole fruit remains the preferable choice owing to its fibre content, but suggest that a modest daily glass of pure orange juice may have effects that accumulate over time, including reduced inflammation, improved blood flow and favourable changes to several markers linked to long-term heart health.
